Why you will love this recipe
  • Apples are rich in pectin, a type of fiber that forms a sticky substance in your gut that clears out excess waste from your gut. Pectin also helps you stay satisfied for longer.

Ingredients
  • 1 medium apple

  • 1/2 cup soy milk

  • 1/2 tsp ground cardamom

  • Oil of choice

  • Chopped dates and nuts, for topping

Method
  1. PREP. Grate apple.

  2. COOK. Heat a pot over medium heat. Add a drizzle of oil. When the oil heats, add apple. Cook until most of the apple juice evaporates and the apple softens, about 5-10 minutes. Stir frequently to prevent burning. Add soy milk. Bring to boil, reduce to a simmer. Cook on low heat until the mixture thickens and the liquid evaporates, about 15-20 minutes. Add ground cardamom at the end of cooking.

  3. SERVE. Ladle halwa into bowls. Top with crushed nuts and chopped dried fruits.

Frequently Asked Questions
  • Does this halwa have added sweeteners? The cooked apples are quite sweet on their own, but if you like more sweetness you can add a touch of a sweetener of choice at the end of cooking.

  • How should I eat apple halwa? This is best enjoyed warm. Optionally you can add a dollop of coconut yogurt or ice cream for a more indulgent dessert.

  • What can I use instead of soy milk? A creamy plant milk works best. If you cannot tolerate soy, you can also use oat milk, pea milk, or coconut milk.
